The "New Authentics" are twenty-first-century American Jews. Fully integrated into American life, American Jews are free to choose their affiliations--they can be Jewish privately, publicly, or not at all. They can be Jewish religiously, spiritually, culturally, ethnically, intellecturally, emotionally, partially, biologically, or invisibly.
The
New Authentics: Artists of the Post-Jewish Generation, Spertus Museum's inaugural exhibition, serves as both a showcase for a diverse group of contemporary artists and as a platform for raising questions about cultural, ethnic, and religious identity in the United States today.
The exhibition catalog by Staci Boris, Senior Curator at Spertus Museum and curator of the exhibition, contains 144 color images as well as essays by Stephen J. Whitfield, Max Richter Chair in American Civilization at Brandeis University; Rhoda Rosen, Director of the Spertus Museum; an excerpt by acclaimed novelist Nicole Krauss; and an artist section with 16 new essays by Sarah Giller Nelson and Lori Waxman.
